The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek return to secure a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him playing time during pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club pursue future success.
Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said after the win at Manchester.
