A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before running away.

The motive of the shooting is unknown and no one has been arrested have been made, police said.

How It Happened

Authorities indicated that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a location near the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the property managing the implementation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.

"It is alleged the man was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report stated.

CCTV footage reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocked hair and clad in what appeared to be a guard's attire shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but fell down a short distance away.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the attack.

Key evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the crime scene.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have have information to contact them.

"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the attack, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to establish their destination," stated a police chief.

A Nation in Mourning

His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.

"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He spoke out bravely about subjects not many people were ready to speak about. This is a profound tragedy."

She appealed to the citizens to not sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's young family.

A Multifaceted Career

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that premiered on a South African TV network.

In addition to his role as a presenter, Stock was involved in various commercial activities, including protective services, providing elite guarding services and protecting prestigious gatherings across South Africa.

He was also said to be engaged in building administration and was involved in property reclaimations.

His murder has caused national trauma and prompted an wave of remembrances from his followers, the government and political parties.

A cabinet official commented he was angry and saddened by Stock's untimely death.

"He spoke his truth fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my decisions as a minister. He was a shining model of who we should be," the minister added.

A public representative said the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director expressed that "DJ Warras was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a skilled narrator, a passionate music lover and a kind-hearted individual who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."

In a communication, the channel he worked for said Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will be remembered".
