Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Selection in English Ashes Squad
England have chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected spot.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the first Test to decide whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man squad, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if the spinner makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted several past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.

Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
However McCullum has opted to stick with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
