The nation's security cabinet has given its endorsement to the recognition of nineteen additional communities in the contested Palestinian territories, marking a ongoing campaign for territorial growth.

Far-right Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and advocated for the move in concert with Defense Chief Israel Katz, asserted that the decision was intended for blocking the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Under international law, Jewish communities in the disputed territories are viewed as in violation of international law.

The decision has elicited censure from Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has previously stated that Israel's "relentless" growth of communities heightens frictions, curtails Palestinians' use of territory, and threatens the feasibility of a independent Palestine.

Increased Unrest and Diplomatic Repercussions

Violence in the region has escalated since the conflict in the Gaza Strip started in the autumn of 2023, further heightening apprehensions that the growth of communities could deepen Israel's occupation and damage the prospects for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The concept of two states refers to the establishment of a State of Palestine in the Palestinian territories, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its capital, roughly along the borders that were in place before the 1967 Middle East war.

Upon assuming leadership in late 2022, the present government in Jerusalem has significantly increased the approval of new settlements and initiated the legalisation process for previously illegal outposts, recognising them as "extensions" of established settlements.

Ongoing Growth

The latest decision takes the cumulative figure of communities recognized over the past three years to sixty-nine, according to Smotrich.

These decisions arrive just days after the UN stated that construction in settlements had hit its peak since 2017.

The most recent round of approvals features the re-establishment of a pair of settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were dismantled almost two decades ago.

In a previous move, the Israeli government authorized twenty-two additional communities in the territories - what was the largest expansion in many years.

Additionally, the Israeli government sanctioned projects in August to build more than 3,000 housing units in the controversial E1 project between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement, a project that had been stalled for decades amid fierce foreign objection.

On that occasion, the Finance Minister remarked it would "put to rest the concept of a Palestinian state."

Demographic Realities and Global Response

Roughly seven hundred thousand settlers dwell in around one hundred and sixty settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as per data from the Israel-based anti-settlement group Peace Now. This is territory that Palestinians aspire to have for a prospective independent state.

This ongoing construction has provoked neighboring countries who have repeatedly said it erodes chances for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has furthermore sparked anxieties about the potential incorporation of the disputed territories.

Former US President Donald Trump had previously admonished Israel about annexation, telling TIME magazine that the country would forfeit all its support from the United States if it happened.

In a policy change, the United Kingdom - along with other countries including Australia and Canada - recognised a Palestinian state, a major although largely symbolic change in official stance.

Israel strongly rejected this step, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that a sovereign Palestine "is not going to occur."
