Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
At least 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
