"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple famous fans have also petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to form a group."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The group are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent resilience called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international following.

However Haim will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
