A new term came to light a few months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by doctors like paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are ongoing. Authorities disputes these accusations, just as it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.
Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A contest that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
