California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, every region of the state is enduring water scarcity. This significant achievement arrives after difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened fire dangers and strained its huge agribusiness.

A Chart Indicates No Abnormally Dry Areas

A recent update from the federal monitoring program confirmed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This shift was driven by a period of significant storms that topped up water storage sites like the state's largest lakes well above their typical levels.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a weather expert.

After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays

The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and tragic losses. While those storms helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Until late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

Yet, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with complete water security. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation show it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This snowpack, which accounts for about a third of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for the year ahead. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” commented a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to preserving this positive water situation for the coming seasons.
