A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miamiâs iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
âThe swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,â Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
âIf we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,â the mayor added. âMay this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.â
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the regionâs Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming â6-7â â deriving from a rap song lyric â often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made âsix-sevenâ its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary âaway from grills and cookwareâ, according to the ceremony's official statement.
âThe annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the end-of-year celebrations,â said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
âIt embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Every time, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.â
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
