A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
